Learning From Online Sources.
Firstly I'm going to say that there are many successful guitarists who have learnt from the internet without guitar lessons: however there are many more successful guitarists who got lessons. If this business was a selfish profit making business I would not claim that you can learn guitar without guitar lessons. But the real question is:
Would you be the best guitarist you can possible be without lessons? I can answer that question for myself and the answer is no.
Although you can learn guitar on youtube, masterclasses, websites... Do you really get the same one-to-one interaction as in a class?
What happens when you learn a bad habit but theres no teacher to tell you it's incorrect? Your need to develop good habits when learning guitar. Many unqualified guitar teachers actually teach these bad habits without realising they are! These unqualified guitar teachers like to pop up on youtube, and other free platforms (I'm not saying all guitar teachers aren't qualified, just some...make sure to do your homework and double check!).
At TomsGuitarLessons, we make it a priority to be qualified so that are well educated in our lessons. Personally, I have completed the grades (1-8) and am certified with a teaching diploma through the University of West London. I also possess a working with children check (WWCC) and have completed the Child Safe eLearning Course.
Bad Habits:
It's easily done to develop a bad habit and many guitarists have them. In our lesson we may look at some incorrect methods of playing guitar to ensure you fix or don't develop these bad habits. Some of these include:
- Using too much force to play (causing pain and strain)
- Having the correct guitar setup (correct action, strings, guitar etc. We can help you out find an appropriate match).
- Playing too fast (causing undeveloped timing and rhythm skills)
- Practicing without metronome (lack of timing)
- Not Practicing Enough or inconsistently (we will help you with a goal or plan)
- Ignoring Music Theory (it isn't always needed but is still important)
After-all, guitar playing should be an enjoyable practice, not one that brings frustration, pain and strife. We try our best to make guitar playing enjoyable with material tailored to you, that you will enjoy. You may have heard that "practice makes perfection", we would like to say this is not true. By knowing guitar methods, good habits and tricks and pairing this within your practice, only then will you achieve closer to perfection.
